A month or so ago we ran our first CAR NUT contest, and someone won so quickly it turned our heads around! Well, here we go with Contest #2 ... Simply tell us what this thing in the picture is and you'll get a free and very cool CAR NUT gift from our GARAGE-FULL of things we receive from car and product manufacturers for various reasons ... Just name it and it's yours! Now, how easy is that? And no jokes about it being the "all-new nuclear power plant for the 2015 mid-engined Corvette" which you just saw on the cover of POPULAR MECHANICS ... It isn't even car-related ... uh, necessarily ...
Yes, we have a winner! And you should have seen some of the guesses we got ... CAR NUT reader John Luke didn't guess, he must read the NY TIMES (or have one of these contraptions at home), because that's where we found this photo and story. Here's the photo caption from the story: "Stuart S. P. Parkin, a physicist, is developing 'racetrack memory,' a technology that makes it possible to read and write data far faster than is possible with existing storage devices."
And here's a link to the story: "http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/11/technology/11storage.html?_r=1&th=&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&emc=th&adxnnlx=1189570302-vQSPd83jVJPJJnMcYf5SzQ"
Read it and enjoy! And check back here often for more CAR NUT CONTESTS!

The "what is this thing?" is a shot of the lab where computer memory research is supposed to produce memory increases by a factor of 10 to 100.
