We used to like MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING, but not much anymore. Not since the founder of MADD, Candy Lightner (remember that great weepy TV movie about her life?), left the group because of what she called a "prohibitionist movement" developing within MADD which she found "vengeful and wrong-minded". Lightner, who founded MADD in 1980, in fact went on to become a "consultant" for the "adult beverage industry".
MADD has succeeded in lowering the blood alcohol level to be considered "driving drunk" from .10 to .08 in most states, if not all by this time. People can actually "blow" an .08 after rinsing with mouth wash. It's the thought of some that MADD's true intention is a "zero tolerance policy" for a driver showing ANY blood alcohol level while driving ... And we all know how well zero tolerance policies have worked in schools and other types of communities. (We've sprinkled some logos for MADD programs throughout this story so people can find out more about them if they desire).
If MADD is indeed out of control, "high" on their own press and achievements (such as Washington, DC, withholding huge amounts of highway funds from states which don't lower their BAC to .08), then what happened at their recent Annual National Awards Luncheon in St. Louis, gave us a laugh. As some might say, it couldn't happen to a better group ...
And here's a letter from MADD PR person Misty Moyse (Candy, Misty ... Is MADD run by a bunch of high school girls?) thanking people for attending the "wonderful conference", and then some ...
"I hope you enjoyed your stay in St. Louis as well as the MADD Media Awards luncheon. It was a pleasure to recognize your outstanding work at our conference.
While we did have a wonderful conference, approximately 100 people from MADD came down with some flu like symptoms including nausea, vomiting and chills. Some were taken to ER for dehydration but most rested and regained strength for the trip home. We are working very closely with the St. Louis Department of Health to determine whether it was a virus or bacteria. I truly hope you were not affected and if you were, we sincerely apologize and hope you are feeling better now.
In compliance with the health department, they have asked MADD to give them a list of names and contact information for all who attended meal functions in the Renaissance St. Louis Grand. I will give the health department your name and phone number and they may be contacting you. If you or any of your guests were affected, please let me know.
Please feel free to call with any questions.
Thank you,
Misty Moyse
Director of Media Relations"Well, what say you? What do you think of MADD and the work they've done?
Here's how we feel here at CAR NUT HQ --- We think that MADD is attacking the problem much too late, at the wrong end of the timeline. Drunk driving and poor driving can only be stopped through education ... through returning DRIVER'S ED and similar programs to our high schools, and spreading the education and early driving experiences to community groups like the Boy and Girl Scouts, the Boys' Club and Girls' Clubs, etc ... Not by threats, fear and intimidation, the way MADD goes after their goals. Now, even though MADD may make claims of developing driving and safety programs for young people, unfortunately, almost all their money and attention goes into their state and national lobbying efforts to prod politicians into "seeing things the MADD way".
A look at many European nations can teach us some great methods and lessons in stopping DUIs, and improving the driving (and thereby the safety) of everyone on the road. In many of those nations, driving is considered a privilege, and not a right (nor even a "rite" of young adulthood). Therefore, the education of new drivers is taken very seriously, and if a young person doesn't have the skills to drive, they do not receive a license until they can prove themselves capable and responsible enough to be operating a two-ton vehicle at 60 miles per hour or much, much more on an open highway. Many of you know (especially those of you who have been there) that speed limits in most Euro nations are more of a "suggestion" than a rule; indeed, Germany's Autobahn still has long sections where there are no speed limits whatsoever ... Yes, they actually TRUST their drivers in that country of powerful and great-handling cars! Imagine if that were the case here in the USA.
MADD has gotten onto the wrong track. If they'd care to listen, we have some great ideas for all that money they take-in and promote every year from the alcohol companies and other industries ... Like, for just one, if alcohol companies can sponsor cars in NASCAR, why can't MADD take some of their cash and get in on that hot action, too? Certainly young people and students make up a very large percentage of those attending NASCAR events and watching the races on TV. MADD might say that's too expensive. OK, then, why can't MADD pony-up some dollars and advertise on SPEED or FUEL, two cable TV networks aimed at the young demographic, or advertise on any of the music video networks seen worldwide? MADD will say they depend on those networks giving them FREE time for MADD-produced Public Service Announcements ... And we all know when PSAs are shown (3am?) and how high-quality and engaging and attractive they usually are (not very at all). MADD should become a regular sponsor on some of these networks (spend some of that money, MADD!) so people become familiar with their themes and message ... That is, if MADD really wants young people to hear them.
