FINALLY, A PORSCHE FOR THE CHAUFFEUR, TOO! NO WORD YET ON PRICE, BUT THE PANAMERA PORSCHE, THE COMPANY'S FIRST SEDAN, WILL BE GERMAN-BUILT, MAKING PORSCHE FANS IN THE USA HAPPY.
Porsche announced that it will invest $153 million in its Leipzig, Germany, plant to build their all-new four-door Panamera coupe. The size of the plant will quadruple with the investment, and worker numbers will rise to 1,000 from the current 400. Production of the Porsche Carrera GT supercar in Leipzig was recently halted, but the Cayenne SUV will continue to be manufactured there. The body work and paint for the Panamera will be completed at Volkswagen's plant in Hanover, Germany.
Will Porsche fan-atics, some of the snootiest (an some say snottiest) car-owners in the world, accept a 4-door version of their favorite driving machine? Not to worry. Many so-called "experts" wondered the same thing about the Cayenne SUV, and Porsche now can not make enough of the high-end ($123,000 for the Turbo version) trucks to satisfy demand.
Porsche clearly does as much "clinicing" of their future products as their budget allows, and by the time a company such as Porsche brings out a vehicle, they have a pretty good idea of exactly how many vehicles they'll be selling for the first four years, and how long it will take that car or truck to turn a profit.
