AUDI SUPERCAR COMING TO THE USA?
First seen in street clothes at the 2003 TOKYO MOTOR SHOW (l, Carey Parker photo), Audi has been the only German company to not toy with the idea of a supercar -- until now. VW has their Bugatti and Lamborghini divisions, Porsche has their $400,000 Carrera, Mercedes makes the also-around-$400K McLaren and even their Maybach could be considered belonging in this rarified league. Now comes Audi with the R8 (r). Based in looks on their R8 race cars which have dominated endurance racing of late, the car was first seen as a concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2003 and just weeks later at the bi-annual Tokyo Bacchanalia. AutoWeek says look for the car to be under-$100K and on-sale in the USA in mid-2007. Audi reecently won the "Sebring 12 Hour" endurance event with R8 machines using DIESEL engines --- wonder if that option will be available in the street version of their R8? The R8 street car is expected to be unveiled officially at this coming June's "24 Hours of LeMans".
