That's a removable glass windscreen, and note the huge wooden steering wheel. That's one of the main reasons drivers in those days of wooden wheels didn't survive crashes very well. Gauges are black numbers and dials on a white background (today's BMWs use red light illumination on the car's gauges at needed).
