CAR NUT NEWS

'CAR NUT' APPEARANCE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH IN LOS ANGELES!

After engaging a PR guy from General Motors in debate on radio Harvard1 station KPCC, a National Public Radio outlet in Los Angeles, about the environmental impact and the future of cars and trucks (and that interview can be found below in this BLOG, just do a search for "KPCC"), I was contacted by the folks staging an event for Harvard, Stanford and Wharton MBA graduates on the topic of: Where to invest for the coming revolution in alternative fuels. It's happening this coming Tuesday at the Luxe Hotel in Brentwood, where the I-405 and Sunset Boulevard meet. (Photo - Harvard University).

Apart from the fuels topic, I'll also be talking about the effect Los Angeles and its denizens has Harvard traditionally had on the worldwide auto industry, and also about the new Bluetec diesels coming from Germany (and approved for California), all the hoopla about ethanol and if it's really the potential savior some say it is, Ford's ZEV engine, hybrids and the new plug-in hybrids coming soon from Toyota and GM, the effect of the new rules NHTSA will be using to test vehicle mileage ... and lots, lots more! Make your reservation to attend ... today! (Photo - More Harvard stuff).

THE 'C' IN DCX IS FOR SALE ... COULD GM BE AMONG THE BIDDERS?

It was the worst-kept 'secret' in the auto industry, and now we can Jeep1 tell you: Chrysler is for sale. Just a few years after "merging" with Chrysler, Daimler is looking to 'off' Their American Cousin, the company they purchased to learn how to make small, economical cars --- Of course the fact that the certified manufacturing genius who headed Chrysler's small car-making business quit as soon as the Germans took over meant things might change. And change they did. Today, Chrysler car and truck sales are in the dumps, the company insists on throwing a gas-hog Hemi engine into anything that'll stand still for 10 minutes, their "new" small cars are not nearly as appealing as their simple old Neon (and all the hi-po SEMA-type equipment which grew up around it) and Chrysler's retirement and health care obligations are possibly enough to bankrupt Daimler. What to do, what to do?

Though it was called a 'merger' when it happened, there were lawsuits filed quickly after DaimlerChrysler became an entity saying that in reality the move by Daimler was a take-over. When tapes of top Daimler execs saying as much surfaced, things only got worse for the newly-merged companies.

Jeepwranglerfront34resized Today, Chrysler has a "For Sale" sign on the lawn at Highland Park, MI, and the Germans are looking to dump this money-loser on whoever can come up with some cash and a good story. (Photo - DCX's Jeep Division's  Wrangler).

Could that 'someone' be General Motors? GM needs help, especially in small-car manufacturing in the USA (it'd be a whole lot cheaper to make a car like the Chevy Aveo in the US than in Korea, by Daewoo, as it is now) and Chrysler could not only bring GM some of the manufacturing expertise and plants they need, but it could also invigorate both companies as GM would remain the world's biggest car-maker, and hold onto that title for many more years, though Toyota is yapping at their heels. With Chrysler on-board, though, GM might keep that title for longer, and that kind of thing is important to Detroit-type execs, no matter what they say publicly.

Also, with Kirk Kerkorian and his GM stock (and his man, Jerry York, was on the GM Board ofGm_logo1_4  Directors and could come back), the MGM Grand multi-zillionaire might finally have the kind of impact on both GM and Chrysler which he has always wanted --- And through Kerkorian and York, their great buddy, Lido A. Iacocca, who sits quietly off on the sidelines, is  biding his time until he might have some "juice" once again not only at his beloved Chrysler, but also at gigantic GM, if the two should merge. 'Heck', Lee might figure, ''if they let an old guy like Bob Lutz' (and these two hated each other at Chrysler) have so much power at GM, virtually able to "green light" entire $1 billion platform projects with the stroke of his pen, maybe there's still room for him in the business, too. And you know what? America could use Lee Iacocca and his marketing genius. He and Lutz might be a formidable pair, even though they can't stand each other. People can get over those things ... If the price (and the power ... and use of the company jet) is right ...

It's also no secret that American car companies (The Former Big Three) have become mostly health care providers which only incidentally make cars and trucks. Health and retirement (H&R) payments have become the main outflows of cash for GM, FoMoCo and Chrysler. Several thousands of dollars on each and every car and truck they sell goes directly to these payments. Dropping those H&R costs could have an immediate effect on the cost of cars and trucks made in the USA.

Uawontheline Remember --- This is NOT the "fault" of the workers and/or their unions. No one held guns to the companies' heads when they signed these agreements with the UAW years ago. All the union contracts should be honored to n-th degree. (Photo - UAW workers on the line). It as the short-sightedness of American executives from the '50s, '60s and '70s which forced the companies into the untenable situations they now find themselves in today.

Looking at health care, there appears to be some hope: It's reported this week that Daimler is going to make a one-time $1 billion payment to the United Auto Workers to cover all present and future Chrysler retirees as far as their health care is concerned, and then the UAW will take-over and handle the details and run the program. This might be one kind of acceptable answer for everyone. Goodyear is looking at doing the same thing (again that $1 billion figure pops up) with the Steelworkers of America, who work in the many Goodyear plants still in the USA.

ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS --- ONE MONTH IN THE AUTO AND AUTO RACING INDUSTRIES

Here's "All the news that fits", Car Nut-style. The assembly lines are humming, the parts-makers are getting their tiny micro-processors and small plastic bits and large pieces of sheet metal to the assembly points where cars and trucks are being completed and then planed, trained, shipped and trucked around the world, the world of auto racing is back and running ... In other words, the annual over-a-month-long holiday celebration of auto shows, factory downtime and race car testing is over (not to mention skiing and golf for the more well-heeled heels among us) ... Replaced by execs back in their suits and suites and/or trekking to Wall Street to buy more time (in some cases), blue collar men and women, the heart and soul of the world's most important manufacturing industry, back at their places on the lines, the transporters and business jets are bringing race cars and their teams, owners and drivers to the tracks worldwide ... The automotive New Year is truly here and now, and Car Nuts worldwide are shaking off the cold and ramping up to a new year of cars, trucks, motorcycles and racing of all sorts! Enjoy in the next few graphs what you missed this past month ... And what's to come!

--- As a result of new legislation which came into effect earlier this month, car owners across the country are now entitled to return their old vehicles to the manufacturers who will dispose of them free of charge.  HEY! CALM DOWN! THIS IS IN THE UK ONLY --- AT LEAST FOR NOW! The UK currently scraps around two million cars and vans each year and the "End of Life Vehicles Directive" means that manufacturers will be responsible for the disposal of vehicles that owners take to the identified facilities.  In 2005/06, Broxbourne Council inspected 1,266 abandoned vehicles and the cost of removing these vehicles from the Borough was £141,000 (about $200,000).  It is hoped that the new legislation will reduce the number of cars abandoned illegally on the highway. Owners not disposing of their old vehicles "properly" can be fined up to $3,500. Get ready to write your US legislators, because this is coming our way, and soon. You can bet on it. Click here to read more about it.

Mgrover1 --- Nanjing's Automobile Group Co.'s plans to relaunch the MG brand gained speed this week when the first two preproduction MG TF roadsters were built at the former MG Rover Longbridge plant in Birmingham, England. MG plans to build about 80 preproduction TFs to validate manufacturing and assembly operations and to ensure that the cars meet safety and emissions standards. The TF's 1.8-liter, 135-hp engine and five-speed transmission are manufactured in China and shipped to England. The body is made at the Longbridge plant, where painting and final assembly takes place. MG spokesman Kim Custer (Kim Custer!??! We know him for decades! Used to be at Mitsubishi, and I think maybe Nissan before that!) says plans to launch the TF roadster and hardtop in the United States are on track for next year. Some assembly will be done in England, but final assembly will be in a small plant in Ardmore, Okla. So a Chinese car company is trying to remake a British classic on assemble it on American Indian reservation in the USA ... Nah, that worldwide economy thing Lou Dobbs talks about every day on 'CNN' ain't really here ...

--- New York City is getting its first robotic parking structure next month in that great city's Chinatown. The high-techRoboticnycparking  garage utilizes a series of elevators, turn tables, lasers, and conveyors to park 67 vehicles into a space where a normal garage could only accommodate 24. Designed by Automotion Parking Systems, the entire garage will only have one attendant, and that’s just for people who can’t figure out how to use the fully automated system. It being in New York, parking isn’t exactly inexpensive, running between $25/day and $400/month. The Chinatown facility is the first of six Automotion garages that are being planned for NYC, including a trio in Brooklyn. America’s only other such computer-controlled system is in Hoboken, New Jersey, and it’s been operating for some time now. These robotic sytems have been used for years in (you guessed it) Asia, where space is at such a minimum, Japanese living in that nation's large cities must get proof from their local police station that they have a place to park a car before they can buy and register one ... Freemasonnascar_1 --- We told you a few months ago about some off-shoot of the Church of Scientology sponsoring a car in a local NASCAR west coast series. Now, we LOVE Scientology and all Scientologists, including most of all, Katie and Tom. In fact, our own personal dream is to acquire for ourselves that "far away" look in Katie's eyes, you know? And oh yeah, maybe produce a kid which looks like an alien. Now ... The Freemasons are up to the same tricks! Not nearly as weird as Scientologists (unless you believe "The DaVinci Code"), Freemasons are nonetheless an interesting and somewhat mysterious outfit ... And they are sponsoring a local NASCAR stocker, too ... And get this ... It's in the Washington, DC area! Ooooh-Weeee-Ohhhh! Click on this line to read more about it!

--- Enjoy the following release, written in "breathless Veddy-Veddy British PR-ese", a language all its own ... Now, have your best Ronald Coleman or Cary Grant accent ready? Good! Start reading out loud: The first Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé destined for the USA has been bought at a charityRollsroycedropheadphantom  auction held during the annual Naples Winter Wine festival in Florida for $2million. More than $1.6 million will go to the Naples Children and Education Foundation, which supports charitable and educational programmes to improve the physical, emotional and educational lives of underprivileged or at-risk children. The car was bought by a resident of Naples, who will take delivery of the car later this year. The winning bid of $2 million is the single highest price paid for any lot in the event’s seven-year history and, it is believed, makes this Phantom Drophead Coupé the most expensive new car ever sold in the USA. The auction, which took place on 27 January, was staged at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in Naples.  Rolls-Royce launched the new Phantom Drophead Coupé at the Detroit Motor Show earlier in January 2007. The two-door, four-seat convertible is hand made at the company’s headquarters in Goodwood, England. It combines the latest in lightweight aluminum technology, elegant design and the very best hand-crafted materials. The result is a car that many have already hailed as the ultimate in open top motoring. An extensive order bank already exists, with all of the 2007 cars allocated. Full production starts in the summer. Word to the wise from CAR NUT BLOG: NEVER believe the prices announced at an auction, especially one of those "Big-time rich guy" events ... And you know the ones we mean! However, if ANYTHING at all went to charity, we're all for it.

Montoyatalemans_1 --- Signing Juan Pablo Montoya is already paying dividends for Chip Ganassi, while the start of the NASCAR season was still weeks off. Montoya, co-driving a Lexus Riley Daytona Prototype with veteran road racer Scott Pruett and Mexican phenom Salvador Duran, is in elite company. He and racing great Mario Andretti are the only drivers to have won the Indianapolis 500, an American open-wheel championship, a Formula One race and, the Colombian's latest conquest, a sports car endurance race at Daytona International Speedway. Good for Juan Pablo, and we hope NASCAR is not still trying to tell the media that his signing makes points for NASCAR's seemingly phony-baloney "Drive for Diversity" ... And Juan Pablo --- Tell Ganassi to get you one of those neat "Telmex"-emblazoned driving suits Pruett and Duran got to wear ... I think you've made the team ...

--- Here's another PR flak's excited release concerning the Maybach 62 S introduction which justMaybach62s  happened in Dubai. The Sheikh mentioned in the story, ruler of Dubai, is also the father (or uncle) of the fellow who created the "A1 Grand Prix" series which is enjoying some measure of success with their spec style of serious open wheel racing at tracks worldwide. Do a search on this BLOG for "A1" and you'll find plenty of info. The sheikh has since sold-off his controlling interest in the series to banks and investors. Visit A1 GP by clicking on this line. The new flagship model in the Maybach line-up is the Maybach 62 S. The engineers in the Manufaktur workshops in Sindelfingen have built the high-end Saloon for the most discerning requirements. And it's a philosophy shared by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. You shouldn't take small steps if you want to achieve something great, says the world's fourth-richest man. For him luxury is an important aspect of his lifestyle. The streets and bazaars of the rich desert city therefore provide the perfect backdrop to experience first-hand the new Maybach 62 S and its characteristics. The "S" in the model designation stands for "Special" and draws attention to the fact that Maybach has incorporated many features requested by their highly discerning customers into the 62 S model. The result is a new dimension in travelling comfort, especially for the passengers in the generously proportioned rear compartment of the new high-end luxury saloon. Not to mention a prodigious power output thanks to the enhanced potency of the twelve-cylinder engine developing 450 kW/612 hp, making the new Maybach 62 S model the world's most powerful chauffeur-driven saloon in series production. Our guess is that the Sheikh either paid wholesale for the car or a lot less than that, in order for Daimler-Benz (parent of Maybach) to promote his name and lkeness worldwide in connection with the marque ... and maybe get a few billionaires interested in the machine, whose sales overall have been a disappointment ...

--- Talk about "Breathless PR-ese"! Break-out that British accent again and read this one out loud, too: The new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition displays thoroughbred motor-racing credentialsMclarenmercedes1_2  (or so it says in the typically breathless voice of the very excited PR person who wrote this). Featuring more than 300 modified components, the super sports car serves up a boost in output, more dynamic chassis tuning, improved aerodynamics and distinctly sporty interior appointments to thrill even the most demanding of sports-car enthusiasts. The flawless roads which today lead through the desert next to Dubai are ideal for demonstrating the pedigree sporting performance that characterizes the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition. Dubai is the up-and-coming business center of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is the setting for the world's most ambitious construction projects, including the man-made "Palm Jumeirah" island, and over the course of recent decades many wealthy sheikhs have become avid automobile aficionados. It is this flair for the exceptional that links the desert city on the Persian Gulf and its inhabitants with the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition premium sports car. ---  Chrysler started the normally low-key Washington Auto Show with news about three new diesel equipped products. The biggest news being the new 6.7-liter Cummins inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel, unveiled in the Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in September, is now certified to meet 2010 EPA standards in all fifty states. In recognition, Chrysler will begin marketing the motor underneath the Bluetec moniker.
Using ultra-low sulfur fuel, particulate filter and absorber catalyst, the engine emits 90 percent less nitrogen oxide than the outgoing 5.9-liter Cummins, and virtually no particulate matter. It’s also good for 350 hp and 650-lb-ft of torque. These Bluetc diesels (and others using the same tech but different names, such as VW's TDI-equipped vehicles) are going to be revolutionary when they hit US shores and prove, finally, to the American driving public, that diesels can be fun and exciting as well as virtually bulletproof to well over 1 million miles, get great mileage and are CLEAN, too. Bmw1series_1 --- BMW, still at least a year away from offering its entry-level 1 Series in the United States, has already completed a mid-cycle freshening of the car sold in Europe for the past two and a half years—and has added a sporty new three-door hatchback model. With the dollar struggling in world currency markets, BMW is taking its time developing 1 Series models for the U.S. market, hoping that a rebound in the strength of the dollar against the euro will ensure profitability once the car goes on sale here in 2008 at the earliest. U.S. models planned include a four-door sedan and a two-door convertible, with the possibility of the new three-door hatchback joining them in time. Read it all by clicking on this line.

--- Smart USA plans to begin sales early next year with a retail network of 50 to 60 dealerships. TheSmarttyo4_2  company is requiring a dealer investment of about $300,000 apiece. Smart USA executives are hitting the road this month to pitch the franchise to potential buyers. They will give priority to DaimlerChrysler dealers who wouldn't have to build separate showrooms, says Smart USA President David Schembri. Smart is a unit of DaimlerChrysler. A Smart showroom in a Mercedes-Benz or Chrysler group store would have at least 2,000 square feet and a separate entrance, Schembri says. UnitedAuto Group Inc., a public dealership group in Detroit, is the sole U.S. distributor of the Smart ForTwo minicar. UnitedAuto CEO Roger Penske said Smart USA will consider non-DaimlerChrysler dealers for Smart franchises, but such dealers would have to build stand-alone stores."Distributor" means Penske's outfit actually buys the cars from the factory and sells them to the dealers. Clearly Penske's UAG dealers will get first shot at handling the new and wildly-popular (in Europe, at least) Smart cars.

YOU WIN! CAMPAIGN TO "SAVE THE 76 BALLS" A SUCCESS!

76logo_1 You did it! Giant oil company Conoco-Phillips has said that not only will they stop removing the iconic "76 Balls" from their gas stations throughout the American west (indeed, the "76 Balls" meant, for many, "The West") and will replace up to 100 of those already taken down with all-new "76 Balls" soon. And the whole thing started with someone named Kim Cooper in Los Angeles, who walked out of her home one day to see the familiar ball adorning the "76" station in her neighborhood removed ... and felt sick about it!

To read the full story, get the background, hear the interview I did on "CAR NUT RADIO' with the man who originally designed the "76 Balls" and savor a bit of victory against the machine, simply click anywhere on the line!

GOODWIN FOUND GUILTY IN MICKEY THOMPSON'S, WIFE'S, MURDERS

Michael Goodwin, for the past 18 years the top (and only) suspect Mickey_thompson_1 in the gangland-style execution deaths of racing legend Mickey Thompson and his wife, Trudy, at their Los Angeles-area home, finally got his day in court. And as everyone who knew Thompson and Goodwin expected, and knew from the day of the murders themselves, Goodwin was guilty and was found so by this brave jury, which deliberated for a day or so before the New Year's break, and for four days afterwards. Using the powerful circumstantial evidence presented to them by the prosecutor and police detectives, and considering the fact that the two men who actually carried-out the murders were never found, Goodwin wound up taking the rap for the crime himself. (Photo above: Mickey and Trudy Thompson).

It won’t bring anyone back, but here’s how the Associated Press story ran on the wires about 3pm Thursday, 1-4-07:

Goodwin Found Guilty in Murders of Racer Mickey Thompson, Wife

PASADENA, CA (AP)  -- Michael Goodwin, a once high-living motorsports promoter, was convicted of two counts of murder in the 1988 killings of Mickey Thompson and the racing legend's wife.

The jury also found that special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and multiple murder were true. The prosecution has said it will not seek the death penalty.

Goodwin was a former business partner of Thompson, a racer who pursued land-speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and drove everything from dragsters and funny cars to midgets, and was a major figure in popularizing off-road contests.

Michael_goodwin_1 I knew both Thompson and Goodwin and actually worked for Mickey for over a year in the very house where the murders were committed. Only through the tenacity of Mickey’s sister, Colleen Campbell and her husband Gary, and the bravery of witnesses such as Alison Triarsi, the only person who actually saw the murders committed (and who, coincidentally, was my producer at KCBS/TV2 in Los Angeles), was this case finally able to come to trial. And now, EIGHTEEN YEARS after the murders, this jury has absolutely, without doubt, positively, brought back the RIGHT VERDICT. (Photo: Michael Goodwin).

The only possible positive to come out of this whole thing is that Mickey's sister Colleen Campbell (who served as the mayor of San Juan Capistrano, CA for a time) created the movement for "Victim's Rights" in the United States, and her work for her murdered brother and other crime victims served as an example to people worldwide, who founded their own groups in their respective nations. This crime was also profiled more than any other on the John Walsh TV show, "America's Most Wanted".

VISIT PRES. FORD'S DESERT FUNERAL WITH US

America's 38th President, Gerald Ford lay in repose at St. Magaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, CA beginning late afternoon on Friday, 12-29-06 and through the morning of Saturday, 12-30-06, when the casket was taken to Palm Springs Airport and placed on a Boeing 747 from the Presidential fleet for its trip to Washington, DC. We visited St. Margaret's late-night Friday, December 29, 2006.

Fordfuneral1_1 As we live in the Coachella Valley, Ford was a powerful presence here. His home in Rancho Mirage was only about 1/2 mile from the Eisenhower Medical Center, where he received physical therapy on a regular basis until recently. The Betty Ford Center for drug and alcohol rehabilitation is on the same grounds as the Eisenhower Center.

As my health is not perfect, I am a moderately-frequent visitor to 'Eisenhower', as it's known locally, and saw the ex-President there several times, the most recent occasion being about a year ago. He was driven to the hospital (and around the Valley) in a very ordinary-appearing Lincoln Town Car. No motorcycle escort, no police 'lead' or 'chase' cars, no helicopter circling above, no lights or sirens, no blocked intersections ... no 'pomp and circumstance' whatsoever, like the man himself.

His security consisted of two Secret Service agents, both very young (the times I saw them --- possibly working on this detail was training for young agents for future 'Protective Intelligence' assignments). Their only give-away were the backpacks they wore and, of course, the unobtrusive earpieces. And who would they be talking to, I always wondered -- They're both here! --- But obviously there was a "base" of some sort at Ford's nearby home. Also, the Secret Service and Homeland Security Headquarters communications bases in Washington, DC, are said to be in-touch with every agent around the world providing any kind of in-field Protective Intelligence.

A C5 Galaxy Air Force transport plane came into Palm Springs on Thursday morning, 12-28-06. The Galaxy, and in fact all the airplanes and cars and trucks associated with the movement of the President's casket and his family and other VIPs, are all well-known sights in the area because of its popularity with Presidents and other world dignitaries. In fact, President Bush was "in-town" only a few months ago, and during that visit he saw Gerald and Betty Ford at their home.

That C5 hauled the funeral hearse (a nice-looking Cadillac), a number of Secret Service vehicles Fordfuneral2 including those used as "War Wagons", which are loaded with agents protecting the "VIP" vehicle(s) fore and aft, the communications equipment and four-wheel drive full-size van which holds it for the Secret Service, and various other "special" cars and trucks. Some of you may have noticed that the hearse used in Washington, DC to transport the President's remains, was actually the very same one used in Palm Desert less than 24 hours before.

At my age, seeing all those vehicles here at 11pm on a Friday night and then watching the very same ones on TV on the other side of the country less than a day later remains a bit strange, interesting and, frankly, exciting.

Almost mystically, as Ford's casket was being moved from the hearse into St. Margaret's, the Presidential Fleet 747 which would bear his body back to DC the next day was flying high overhead, heading for the Palm Springs Airport just a few miles away. It was clearly visible to everyone in the area.

So all the on-the-road accoutrements which go with a Presidential-level visit are "par for the course" here in golf-crazy Palm Springs and surrounding environs. The Ford compound in Rancho Mirage is about 10 miles from Palm Springs. The modest home (certainly modest by Rancho Mirage standards) has a guest-house which the President used as an office, and that building was once reputedly owned by the mother of actress/singer/dancer Ginger Rogers. The home is on a fairway of the Thunderbird Country Club, but has its own separate, secure entrance leading directly to a main street in the area.

The visits to the church were coordinated by the military and Secret Service with, to be honest, an almost-frightening and certainly intimidating (and meant to be) military precision. The main roadway in front of the church and the neighborhood around it were closed and secured with Presidential-level, tight-as-a-drum security from almost the minute the death was announced. Huge portable generators powering extremely bright lights were placed up and down the road for about a mile in each direction from the church.

Fordfuneral3_1 Remember that all these plans had been made literally years in advance, approved by President Ford and his family. No doubt the "powers that be" were aware of Ford's imminent passing, and when it ws officially announced, all the agencies were ready to snap into action.

The entire experience of taking the shuttle bus from the Indian Wells area to the church was akin to being 'transported' from the laid-back and friendly atmosphere of the desert directly into the center of a world-class military-secured event, like going to sleep in the desert with warm winds and smiles all around, and waking up inside the US Capitol with all its attendant military, pomp and circumstance.

Ever seen a police roadblock? The military, locals cops and sheriffs and the Secret Service set up these roadblocks ... And they looked pretty damn intimidating and functional. Water-filled plastic barriers lined "off-limits'" areas, Secret Service patrolled the surrounding neighborhood on a 24-hour basis, choppers flew above the usually quiet residential streets, and it all lent an air of seriousness and formality to about a one-square-mile piece of Palm Desert.

Visitors parked their cars about 5 miles from the church, at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens, a place which those of you who watch tennis on TV might be familiar; At least one ATP 'major' is played there annually. The facility is also used for major concerts (Tom Petty and The Who were both there this past year) and other events.

After parking on the grass lots surrounding the Garden, visitors were directed through a gate where a few local sheriff's officers were positioned, giving everyone the 'quick once-over' and reminding everyone what was NOT allowed on the buses: Anything electronic, no purses, no water, no backpacks, no cell phones, cameras, audio or video devices ... In a word ... 'Nothing' allowed on the bus, outside clothes, wallet and keys. All visitors had metal-detector wands and 'pat downs' from Riverside County Sheriff's Deputies. No one we saw complained at all.

The buses were from all over the area; probably about 70 of them, from San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Riverside ... The Coachella Valley itself doesn't have the number of buses needed for such a major event.

Sidenote: I had to drive into and out of Los Angeles for business on Friday, and on the way back, Fordfuneral4 passed about 30 of the Los Angeles buses, all driving in single-lane 'motorcade' fashion on the I-10 Freeway, headed for Indian Wells. It was kind of exciting even to see that!

The bus ride took about 10 minutes, and all local roadways had been closed with police at each intersection to provide a smooth flow of visitors into the buses and headed toward the church.

Exiting the buses, visitors found themselves at the very front of the church. The lobby area contained a large, very lifelike portrait of the ex-President, and a small display of Ford memorabilia. Church workers handed each attendee a card form the Ford family and a card from the church with a photo of Ford on one side and a prayer on the other. All very nice and thoughtful for the visitors (and after all, we are paying for all this).

In the church itself, there were three TV cameras which I saw (pool cameras and those from C-Span, I think) and a few Secret Service agents stationed about, and a few military members. The entire funeral had been officially designated a "National Security Event", just like the Super Bowl, a Presidential inauguration or the Fourth of July in New York City. Security inside the church was not overwhelming, but definitely enough to persuade anyone thinking of doing anything untoward ... to think twice, at least.

The casket was on top of a small platform. The casket was covered by an American flag. To the casket's right was displayed an American flag, to the left, the impressive and beautiful deep blue USA Presidential flag. The casket was surrounded by a member of one of each of the military services. Ramrod straight, powerful and effective-looking, they leant a surreal appearance to the event, an entirely unexpected tableau to find in a local church in Palm Desert, California, as if a part of the nation's capitol had been installed in the middle of California's lower desert.

Returning to the Tennis Garden from the church was smooth and uneventful; As people got off the buses, they were able to sign Visitor's Books for the Ford family. Another nice, classy and elegant touch. Though people were quiet on the bus ride both ways, everyone seemed very pleased that they had taken the time to make this short journey. The atmosphere was not party-like, but somewhat light-hearted, reflecting the fact that Ford's death was certainly no shock at age 93, but it was still important to pay respects. Abraham Lincoln's funeral train took two months to go from Union Station in Washington, DC to his home in Illinois. That was the first time the American public had any chance to participate in a Presidential memorial, with the President's casket in attendance. The point is, not many people have ever had the opportunity to take part such an event, and certainly if it happens in your town, one should definitely go.

I joked with Carey when we got home that we should put the funeral cards which had been handed-out at the church on Ebay to see what we could get ... She laughingly agreed ... So imagine our surprise when we logged onto Ebay only about 8 hours after these cards were first available to the public to see several already online and for sale! Sheesh! I guess nothing is sacred, after all!

We figured the cards-for-sale might have come from journalists in-town for the services and got them in their Media Kits ... Or from some people associated with the church ... or from visitors like us! Anyway, we'll sell one of ours for $200 with my autograph and for $300 without (Hey it's a joke! Calm down! They ain't for sale!).
