The day before Thanksgiving, 2007, and not a creature could be heard ... The Chevrolet Volt concept/prototype is slated for possible 2010 production. After a six hour charge from a home or garage or office 220 volt plug, this so-called "plug-in hybrid" will run on batteries-only for the first 40 miles. After that initial drive, a 1 liter, 3-cylinder generator, equipped with a 12-gallon gasoline tank, kicks into service, constantly re-charging the lithium ion battery pack for yet another 40 mile all-electric jaunt. In total, Chevy is claiming that Volt, with a fully-charged lithium-ion battery pack can travel for 640 miles without having to stop to re-fuel that 12-gallon gas tank. Notice, too, the lack of show-goers at 6:37pm on the evening before Thanksgiving. Frankly, we expected a larger crowd.
