The word "hybrid" has certainly caught-on in a big way with the American public, and even if many consumers are still not quite sure what it means when applied to a particular gasoline-powered vehicle, they do think it means "good", for some reason or other. So leave it to Dodge, makers of the V10-engined Viper, and the "performance division" of Chrysler, to make a hybrid-informed pitch for their "Hybrid Hemi" powerplant, and they can do it with a straight face, too ... Very impressive, their informing the public that a gas-wasting engine you've been making for some 50 years is now clean and gas-sipping! At the LA Auto Show, the Dodge display was promoting this "Hemi Hybrid" (yes, you read right). Dodge said that adding an electric motor and batteries to cars and trucks equipped with their famously fast and definitely fuel-wasting Hemi engine, can improve that vehicle's gas mileage by some FORTY PERCENT. Impressive, huh? But keep in mind that this Hemi-Hybrid gimmick, while it may indeed improve a Hemi-engined vehicle's mpg by 40%, that car or truck will still only average less than 20 miles per gallon.
